A variety of manifestations of peripheral nervous system involvement are commonly encountered. It is determined by a number of endogenous
or exogenous factors. Differential diagnosis involves searching for possible causes and objectively determining the extent and
degree of involvement (sensory or motor symptoms). In order to identify the cause, laboratory workup is essential and electromyography
is required to confirm the type of involvement. The paper characterises the two main types of peripheral neuropathies.
