Thyroid gland and diabetes mellitus from the perspective of a diabetologist

The prevalences of diabetes mellitus, particularly of type 2, as well as of thyroid diseases have been increasing in recent years and are

becoming a major problem in developed civilizations not only in medical, but also in social terms. Endocrinopathies occur much more

frequently in diabetic patients than in those without diabetes, with the thyroid gland being the most commonly affected gland in diabetics

(which is the same in the nondiabetic population). The most significant thyroid diseases in diabetics are autoimmune thyroiditides – due

to both their high prevalence in diabetics and the severity of clinical impacts on diabetes treatment.
