Cardiovascular diseases, cancer, metabolic and chronic respiratory diseases are the leading causes of the premature deaths and disabilityadjusted

life years (DALYs) worldwide, especially in developed countries. All these diseases are determined by the same modifiable risk factors:

(a) lifestyle (smoking, excessive alcohol use, physical inactivity); (b) poor nutrition (low intake of fruits and vegetables, high intake of salt

and fat); (c) metabolic (hypertension, overweight/obesity, hypercholesterolemia). Also poor social relationships seems to be the comparable

risk factor as smoking and hypertension. The effective interventions both on the individual and population wide levels, include regulation,

pricing and education, have the potential to reduce factors which short the life. The politicians, society, institutes, non-governmental

organizations and every person are responsible for the improvement of public health and reduction of social disparities in life expectancy

and mortality. The role of physicians and other health professionals in both primary and secondary prevention is unique and essential.
