Hyperuricaemia, a pathological increase in serum uric acid levels, is the most significant modifiable risk factor for the development of gout. The prevalence of hyperuricaemia in the population has been increasing during recent decades. The risk of developing gout increases significantly with the increase in uricaemia. Patients with asymptomatic hyperuricaemia and gout have an increased risk of developing comorbidities, especially hypertension, chronic kidney disease, and metabolic syndrome. Asymptomatic hyperuricaemia and gout are associated with increased overall and cardiovascular mortality. The basis of successful treatment of hypeuricaemia is...

Pain is one of the most serious manifestations of an advanced stage of cancer disease. In the palliative care setting, chronic pain is encountered also in patients in the terminal stage of other diseases; however, the greatest proportion of patients suffering from chronic pain are among those with tumour-related pain. Since pain substantially affects the quality of life of incurably ill patients, it may certainly be a common reason for visiting a general practitioner with a request for pain relief. The article presents an overview of both pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatment options.

Early control of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, simultaneous interventions, and adherence to treatment are the mainstay of CV prevention. Arterial hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia often co-occur, with their CV risk being multiplied, but on the other hand, concomitant antihypertensive and lipid-lowering therapy reduces this risk significantly synergistically. A fixed combination of an ACE inhibitor and a statin is the most convenient combination in treating arterial hypertension and hypercholesterolaemia in both primary and secondary prevention of CV disease. Since October 2019, a novel fixed combination of perindopril and atorvastatin has...

Accidents represent an undesirable phenomenon, which involves considerable costs and affects the victims' personal, professional and social life. Therefore, a number of rules have been laid down for the assessment, recognition and compensation of accidents. General practitioners participate in several levels of decision-making concerning compensation of accidents; their role and tasks differ in cases of general accidents, and occupational accidents . This article describes the obligations of the parties involved, and provides an overview of the compensation of health damage and the basic principles of its assessment. At the same time, it draws attention...

Dry eye syndrome is a common ocular disease. Treatment depends on the underlaying cause. Arteficial tears are the usual first line treatment. New tools available to help diagnose the presence of this syndrome and innovative therapeutic trends are discussed.

Obstructive defecation syndrome (ODS) is a common problem of many women as well as men seeking gastroenterological or proctological examination due to chronical obstipation or other defecation disorders. Most often the patients with defecation problems and obstipation contact their general practitioner. However, the cause of obstructive defecation syndrome is a number of combinations concerning many functional and anatomical disorders of the pelvic floor and the organs in the small pelvis. Therefore, the diagnosis and the consequent treatment should focus on all possible causes. Only a well taken anamnesis, multidisciplinary approach, a combination...

Central pontine myelinolysis and extrapontine myelinolysis are osmotic demyelination syndromes due to rapid correction of severe hyponatremia. Their clinical manifestations may often vary. We report a case of a patient with rapid onset of neuropsychiatric symptoms and parkinsonism following rapid correction of hyponatremia, with an initially considered drug-induced etiology. MRI findings compatible with central pontine and extrapontine myelinolysis, however, developed only with a delay of several weeks when clinical symptoms were already disappearing.

The main risks of anti-tumour therapy that general practitioners encounter on daily basis include drug interactions and the management of side effects. Drug interactions are more frequent in the treatment of polymorbid patients. The patients treated for cancer are in greater risk because their therapy is often based on a combination of cytostatics, furthermore, they receive a whole array of supportive drugs. The treatment of cancer is accompanied by numerous side effects. The less significant ones can be managed in cooperation with general practitioners, thus improving the comfort and the compliance of the patient.

Anxiety disorders are among the most frequent mental disorders. Anxiolytics and antidepressants are primarily used to treat anxiety, with a great deal of attention being paid to the development of novel drugs, if possible, without adverse effects such as sedation or those causing dependence, sexual dysfunction, and/or weight alterations. People have always tried to manage anxiety and its bodily manifestations by using plants; lavender extract, introduced here in more detail, is the only registered anxiolytic of plant origin.
