Thyroid-associated orbitopathy is a chronic autoimmune disease with a proven connection to thyroid autoimmunity. Most often, patients
with Graves-Basedow disease are affected, however, it may also occur in those with autoimmune thyroiditis. This condition affects all the
structures of the orbit – extraocular muscles, orbital fat and connective tissue, orbital septum and tear gland. Various ocular symptoms
can also be the first sign of thyroid disease. In these cases, a good knowledge of ocular signs and symptoms of thyroid-associated orbitopathy
is necessary to establish the correct diagnosis. Only timely and appropriate treatment can prevent the serious consequences
of this disease.
