Stomatitis is an inflammation of the mucous lining of any of the structures in the mouth, which may involve the cheeks, gums, tongue,
lips and roof or floor of the mouth. The inflammation can be caused by local conditions in the mouth itself, such as poor oral hygiene,
poorly fitted dentures, mouth burns from hot food or drinks, chronic mouth breahing due to plugged nasal airways that can cause dryness
of mouth tissues which in turn leads to irritation. Other causes are represented by the whole body factors such as certain treatments
(e. g. in cancer patients), some drugs, allergic reactions or infections. The disease is painful and patients often limit their food intake.
If there is a prolonged duration and a serious underlying disease the risk of undernutrition and its complications is increased.
