Basic eye examinations in general practitioner‘s practice include visual acuity in distance and near vision, visual field examination and

orientation and color vision testing. The history of the patient is an important part of the examination, with a focus on subjective problems

suffered by the patient, factors such as injury and other symptoms (nausea, vomiting), that can be linked to eye diseases. General

practitioners in larger cities and especially in the capital, will generally send most patients directly to an ophthalmologist because they

have the opportunity to do so. In smaller towns and villages it is not always possible to immediately send the patient to an ophthalmologist,

and therefor it is important to have a thorough history of examinations. The general practitioner then must decide whether the

situation is an emergency that requires intervention from an ophthalmologist, or whether the patient is able to correctly treated without

this specialized treatment. Nevertheless, the treatment of eye diseases by a general practitioner is limited and it is best to always transfer

treatment of the patient to an ophthalmologist. In this article, we therefore primarily focused on examination methods, principles of

treatment of some conditions and the provision of first aid for eye injuries.

color vision testing, first aid for eye injuries and co-operation of a general practitioner with an ophthalmologist.
