Adverse effects and drug interactions of long-term proton pump inhibitor therapy

Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) have an excelent safety profile. Long-term use is becoming increasingly common at variety of patients. This

paper is a brief review of current evidence and view on this important drug group, focusing on potential adverse effects of long-term PPI

use that have generated some concern: Vitamin B12 deficiency, iron deficiency, hypomagnesemia, bone fractures and enteric infections.

Clinical relevant drug-drug interactions of PPI are also mentioned.
