Lyme borreliosis (LB) is a disease which, with its polymorphic manifestations, touches many medical specialties. While some clinical pictures are completely typical and practically unmistakable, others force differential diagnoses that must consider a whole range of diseases. Even though diagnostic tools available are considerable, there is still no one single clear test at hand to clearly differentiate the active manifestations of the disease from mere “laboratory echoes” and thus allow a clear indication for the course of treatment. The following text may be of help in determining diagnosis and initiating treatment.

Advanced venous insufficiency represents a severe disorder, which is caused by neglecting incipient and moderate stages of venous disease. The most frequent clinical picture presents varicose veins, less common is posttrombotic syndrome. In both cases, the consequent compressive therapy and skin care play the most important role. Allergy is a chronic inflammatory response of the mucosa or skin. It is a hyper-reaction of the body to environmental allergens. Dust mite allergy mainly affects the respiratory system most commonly causing rhinitis and asthma. Complaints may last all year or change with varying intensity. Atopic dermatitis (AD) is one of the most common skin conditions affecting mainly children but also adults. The etiopathogenesis of the disease, its incidence and course and typical as well as less common clinical manifestations are briefly introduced. Complications of the course of AD are briefly mentioned. Major attention is paid to external treatment and preventive care of atopic skin, particularly in childhood. Risk and aggravating factors and options of systemic treatment are also mentioned.

Lyme borreliosis numbers among the relatively common illnesses occurring in the Czech Republic. The clinical picture of Lyme borreliosis is extremely varied; therefore, doctors from a range of specialties can encounter these patients. While clear-cut cases most often do not present a diagnostic problem, there is a whole number of clinical pictures that are not at all typical. As a result, determining whether or not the illness in question is indeed Lyme borreliosis can be much more difficult. This fact makes a knowledge of laboratory findings assessment very important.
