Type 1 diabetes mellitus (DM1) is an autoimmune disease in which the insulin-producing β-cells of the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system. In the development of DM1, genetic predisposition plays a role, but also external factors contribute to the breaking of immunological tolerance. The importance of these factors is individual, which is reflected in the clinical heterogeneity of the diabetes clinical onset (different age at manifestation, speed of development of clinical symptoms, etc.). In DM1 patients various immunological abnormalities have been described, however, a key role is still attributed to autoreactive T lymphocytes. A common...

Vitamin C is important as a reducing agent and is involved in many biological processes, including collagen and neurotransmitter synthesis. This study aimed to critically review the available information on the potential of intravenous vitamin C (IVC) in oncology and to discuss cases where its use might be indicated. A literature review of available scientific publications focusing on the use of IVC in the treatment of cancer was conducted. Papers from the last two decades were included, including phase I-III trials that evaluated the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of IVC. High-dose IVC has potential as an adjuvant therapy in oncology, particularly...

Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of mortality not only in the Czech Republic, but also in most countries of the world, with an ever-increasing prevalence. Arterial hypertension and dyslipidaemia are among the main risk factors for the development of CVD. Treatment is comprised of non-pharmacological measures, mainly changes in diet and increasing the amount of physical activity, as well as pharmacotherapy. Adherence to medication, which can be increased by the use of combination preparations, is a crucial factor in the success of treatment. Early intervention of risk factors will increase the length of life in good health, which is a more...

Osteoarthritis is a multifactorial disease that affects a large portion of the population. It is reported that the image of osteoarthritis is visible in X-ray examinations in up to 60% of examined individuals over 65. It is one of the most common causes of morbidity. Osteoarthritis accounts for up to 20% of visits to a general practitioner's office. In younger individuals, it can be a cause of disability. It is a multifactorial degenerative joint disease in which there is a disruption in the renewal of joint cartilage. The joint cartilage loses its luster, softens, and fissures form on its surface. Bacterial lysates stimulate the general immunity of the body in a non-specific way. They act on non-specific defense mechanisms, leading to an increase IgA in mucous membranes, phagocytic activity and interferon gamma production. They can also stimulate the production of specific antibodies against the bacterial antigens that make up the preparation. In many clinical trials, oral bacterial lysates have been shown to decrease the risk of recurrent respiratory infections in children and adults and reduce the need for antibiotics.
