Nocturia has a wide range of causes beyond the urological field. The main causes are polyuria, nocturnal polyuria and disorders of the collection or evacuation function of the bladder. The individual causes must be carefully distinguished from each other with the predominance of non-invasive diagnosis, as the treatment of individual causes of nocturia is diametrically different. If it is not possible to determine exactly the cause of nocturia on the basis of these methods or nocturia does not respond to the specified treatment, it is necessary to proceed to an invasive examination. The treatment of nocturia is based on the diagnosed cause and differs...

HIV infection has been known for more than forty years. Over the course of four decades the disease has become in highly adherent patients treatable with a good prognosis, thanks to the tremendous efforts of many teams of scientists from around the world. Its diagnostic has been widely available since the mid-80s. Treatment has gone through many stages of development. Current approaches use combinations of several treatments blocking different sites in the HIV replication cycle. A properly treated patient should be in good clinical condition, the performance of his cellular immunity should be comparable to healthy individuals, and HIV RNA levels should...

The possibilities of pharmacotherapeutic alleviation of dyspnoea represent an important topic. When choosing medication a great amount of factors need to be considered with respect to medical condition of a particular patient. One of the well-established bronchodilator drug is a purine analogue theophylline. It is important to remember that this caffeine-related substance may in addition to the positive therapeutic effects (bronchodilator, immunomodulatory) show also some characteristic negative ones such as tachycardia, hypokalaemia, diarrhea, insomnia, convulsions, etc. The article describes a case report of a cardiological patient to whom theophylline...

Subacute thyroiditis, also known as de Quervain's thyroiditis, is a painful inflammation of the thyroid gland. The disease is relatively rare and, despite its typical clinical symptoms, laboratory features and ultrasound findings, correct diagnosis is not always quick and easy. It often follows a previous viral infection of the upper respiratory tract. The most common first symptom is palpable and painful thyroid gland accompanied often by symptoms of hyperthyroidism. The disease should be initially distinguished from prolonged upper respiratory tract infection or other causes of thyrotoxicosis and then appropriate therapy should be started. Substantial...
